Biography:

Little to nothing is known about this writer's life. We don't even know where he was born for sure. Different sources give different locations. We do know that he studied with Ryūtei Tanehiko and that he was one of the authors of Shiranui tales and that of the Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari. Before that he may have worked in a liquor store, a haberdashery and a bookstore, but none of this can be verified at this point.

Pedro Bassoe wrote on pages 14-15 in his 2016 doctoral thesis from the University of California, Berkeley: "Titles such as Ryūkatei Tanekazu’s (1807-1858) The Tale of Shiranui (Shiranui monogatari, 1849-1885) continued to be issued well into the latter part of the 19th century."

In footnote 51 at the bottom of page 15 Dr. Bassoe noted: "The Tale of Shiranui was begun by Ryūkatei Tanekazu and Ryūtei Senka (1806-1868, aka Ryūtei Tanehiko II), both students of the first Ryūtei Tanehiko, and was continued by Ryūsuitei Tanekiyo (1821-1907), a student of Tanekazu’s."
