Biography:

Yoshitoyo was a printmaker of the Osaka school. He produced mainly prints with theatrical subjects and actor portraits. He was also a poet.

Roberts in his A Dictionary of Japanese Artists... wrote on page 204: "Ukiyo-e printmaker. Pupil first of Kunisada, then of Kuniyoshi. Lived and worked in Edo, and for a while in Osaka, where he was a member of the Kamigata-e group. Produced prints of warriors and designs for kites. Many of his compositions tend to be overdramatic. May be the same artist as Uehara Yoshitoyo."

Peter Ujlaki said that Yoshitoyo was only active from 1854-57. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has prints by Gansuitei Yoshitoyo which they date to 1858.
